Has anyone adapted a fiberglass nosebowl for an o470 super Stinson?  The aluminum nosebowl seems doomed to keep cracking.

   Thanks, Morgan

I have not used a fiberglass nosebowl. Just curious where the cracks are happening and would reinforcements be beneficial as I am modifying the nosebowl for my 470 project. Thanks Eddie

Cracks have formed and been repaired at most lower cowl attachment points.  Also cracks on the front of the cowl.  And cracking on the sides, at the back edge.  The nose bowl seems to get compressed between the upper and lower cowl.   I would think a circular reinforcement around the back edge would be ideal.

Morgan,

See my previous post about the split cowl. In addition to that information, I have added a picture that shows the "U" channel reinforcement around the perimeter of the cowling a little more clearly. The cuts in the channel were made for additional clearance around the front cylinders. Your application for the O-470 may vary for the oil cooler etc. Just out of curiosity, have you had your prop dynamically balanced?

Bob
