One Piece windshield being installed.

There was an STC by Aircraft Windshield Company. They will still sell you one after they make it special order. The guy who owned it with them (maybe he owned the company? I can’t remember) died and they no longer support it. So it’s back to a field approval only. Looks like from others experience over on the ISC forum, it’ll be twice as expensive to buy the one piece than to buy both halves…. At least that was all the case in 2016.

Aircraft Windshield Company is where I got mine but the paperwork I got still required a field approval. It only took about 15 min. The GADO at YIP is on the field so it was easily done. My IA does a lot of field approvals so the FAA was used to working with him. The approval was done in 1992 so an STC could have been created after that.

Jason Tadpole Tepool I bought one in 2016 new. It took a lot of persuasion to do so. My plane has had a one piece for a couple decades, back when Aircraft Windshield made, marketed and sold them regularly. So in my rebuild I wanted to get a new one…and fix the crack in the old one and sell it used. I called them and they said they won’t make them since there is no STC and they don’t want to get caught in the middle of any issues with the FAA. I told them I already have one approved by the FAA and installed, but I wanted to replace the part….no issues or risk. I provided them all my paperwork and logbook entries, and photos, and they finally agreed to make one for me. I got the impression they really didn’t want me to tell anyone about it either, but honestly, for my plane with it already approved, it’s no issue. I paid $798 in March of 2016.

As I understand there is not a vendor that is producing a one piece windshield today, however there is a member on the Facebook page that is willing to make some, problem would be getting all the materials documents as such.

Below are some 337s provided by Billy Carter from various one piece installs and some drawings.

This is and STC that was granted that mentions the Gary Murdock documents included in the link above.

Now will all this information and the opportunity for someone to make the windshield, now you need to get it approved. Well with the STC, and the approved data from Gary Murdock, you should have all you need. Below is an email from Mike Busch who is very familiar with FAA guidance and his provides his thoughts,

Please note:

On contacting this lady to purchase a windshield it one should state that
the desire is to have one made like mine or Murdoc’s and it should be of
thicker material
Like my 337 stated.
It will have to be made as experimental (no certification for single piece)
and installed by 337 approval.
It can be made clear, gray tent or as mine green.

I am willing to help anyone on explaining the installation but it is all
spelled out in the matenince disc.

I wanted to shire the contact address and phone number.
